Show something new !

It's time for the next challenge over at The Fashionable Stamping Challenge and for the next fortnight the challenge is to 'Show something new'. This could be a new technique or a new product or stamp. Remember that we are a stamping challenge so you must include some stamping on your project.

As it's Father's Day today I took the opportunity to make the one card I needed for my other half's Dad.

I started this card by covering some DP with Tarnished Brass Distress Stains. The text on the paper does still show through, but you can't really see it on the photo.

Then I used my new Tim Holtz Artful Tools set to stamp the compasses along the bottom edge. Then I used a piece of, well to be honest I don't know what you call it ! Lin Brown gave a piece of this to everyone who attended her stamp carving workshop. I dipped it into some Fresco Finish Inky Pool paint and dotted it over the card.

The colour of the metallic Distress Stains reminded my of brown paper which gave me the idea to use some brown tissue paper, that was part of some packaging in a recent parcel.  I tore it up and glued it to the card.

I then blended Vintage Photo and Walnut Stain Distress Inks around the edge.  I really liked the effect, it was sort of a leathery look, I will definitely use this techniqe again !

I was going to blend some Freso Finish paints onto some card and went to grab my water spray but grabbed the Ink Refresher instead. So, I then wondered what would happen if I used that instead ! I sprayed the card with the Ink Refresher then dabbed Beach Hut, Pumpkin Soup, Limelight and Old Gold Freso finish over the card. The paint didn't run, like it would with water, and it gave a sort of stippled effect. I like it !

I then stamped the car stamp from the PaperArtsy 1218 set (which I bought yesterday from the wonderful Artist Trading Post shop !) onto the painted card and cut it out.

I used another piece of the card and the cog EF from the Texture Fades Clock and Steampunk set. I blended more Vintage Photo and Walnut stain DI around the edge. I then brushed some Onyxite Treasure Gold around the edges too.

I was rather taken with the brown tissue paper technique and I also discovered that if you stamp onto card and stick the tissue paper over the top you can still see the stamping ! So, I used the text stamp from the PaperArtsy 1218 set then stuck the tissue paper over the top. While the glue was still wet I wrinkled the tissue paper. When the glue was dry I rubbed Vintage Photo and Walnut Stain DI around the edge.

I die cut a clock using the Tim Holtz Weathered Clock die and used the Ink Refresher technique again.

I stamped the spark plugs, from the same PaperArtsy set, three times and cut them out. I stamped the word Dad onto a scrap piece of the Fresco Finish card and attached it to the main image with some twine through an eyelet.

I hope you get chance to join us for this challenge and do make sure you hop over to the main blog and check out the fantastic projects of the rest of the DT.

Step x Step - tag !

It's my turn to share a Step x Step today over at Frilly and Funkie and I've also decided to share it here too ! Now you may need your sunglasses for this one as I decided to play with the gorgeous Seasonal Distress Inks and if you've not used them yet, you really need to! The project I'm sharing is my tag from the current Frilly and Funkie challenge - Birds and Nests. You've still got plenty of time to enter this challenge too !

I've used one of the fabulous jumbo tags that Linda sells in The Funkie Junkie Boutique which I've drawn around on to some watercolour paper. I cut it out and trimmed it down so that it would sit on to the jumbo tag with a border.

Then I've rubbed Ripe Persimmon, Salty Ocean, Peacock Feathers and Picked Raspberry Distress Inks onto my craft mat and spritzed them with water. I've pressed the watercolour tag onto the spritzed Distress Inks. The watercolour paper stands up to all the water really well and the colours blend together beautifully.

After the first dip in the inks, dry it off with you heat gun and then dip it again to create the 'splotches' of different colours.

Make sure your tag is completely dry at this stage as this will stop excess embossing powder sticking to your tag. I've used the Artistic Outpost Birds of a Feather stamp and Tim Holtz' embossing ink with white embossing powder. I also rubbed the embossing ink around the edge of the watercolour paper and sprinkle more embossing powder onto it to create a border.

I then used the pretty little border stamp from the same set and stamped around the edge using black Archival ink.

For the honeycomb stamping I've used the stamp from the Tim Holtz Mixed Media set. I've not used an acrylic block as I didn't want the stamping to be perfect.

The jumbo tag has been embossed using the Tim Holtz Texture Fade from the Bubble and Honeycomb set.  As the tag was larger than the embossing folder I've embossed one end the turned it around and embossed the other. You can just about make out the join in the above photograph, but as it's going to be the bottom layer it doesn't matter. I then blended all of the different Distress Inks that I used earlier over the tag and I also brushed a little Treasure Gold over it too.

When I mopped up the Distress Ink from the earlier stage, I kept the baby wipe I'd used and laid it out flat to dry. The fabric has a similar texture to felt when it's dry and as the colours are what I 've already used in the project they are co-ordinated too ! I've used the Tim Holtz Tattered Flowers strip die to cut the flowers with.

The flowers have been layered up and a little self adhesive pearl attached to the centre. The bird, nest and swirls have all been made using another piece of watercolour paper that's had the spritzed Distress Ink treatment. The swirl has been cut using the Tim Holtz Festive Greenery strip die.

The letters are cut from watercolour paper too using the Tim Holtz Vintage Market strip die and I've drawn around the edge of each letter using the Picket Fence Distress Marker. To finish, I added a piece of the beautiful lace that Linda sells in The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

I hope you've enjoyed today's Step x Step !

I'm off to visit the Artist Trading Post's new shop today so no doubt some little bits and pieces will leap into my hands !

Have a fun and crafty week end !
